I spent yesterday strolling along outside all day. Researchers say people in general don’t get enough Vitamin D so I make sure to live outside.
Saturday mornings are by far my favorite time of the week. We have a fairly large Farmers Market filled with a variety of items. You see, I’m a food advocate and healthy living is very important to me.
Farmers Markets hold a lot of beautiful treasures. This market had making your own flower arrangements…
and of course, lots of delicious foods.
I left with three full bags! It’s August so the market is filled with the most items I have ever seen. Carrots, squash, star melons, tomatoes, kale, spinach, onions, peppers, watermelon, peas…you name it, it’s there.
Why shop at Farmers Markets?
- Everything is local. You won’t find products from far away countries here. Everything is home bound!
- Eat the Season. When you purchase from a farmers market, you will purchase foods that are in season. You are reconnecting with life’s real cycle of food! (Bonus: It’s the tasty way to eat!)
- Meet the farmers. Here, you get to actually have a conversation with the person growing your food! I spoke with a farmer yesterday who said, “You won’t need any sugar when making salsa with these tomatoes…go ahead, taste it!” We had a conversation over his practices (he delivers organic foods) and since we had that communication, I will return!
- Pricing. Prices at chain stores are jacked up due to fossil fuels, traveling expenses and fertilizers etc., since local farmers markets are, local, the distance of travel is less and so is the price of food. I bought green peppers 2 for $1.00. I know I can’t find that at my local grocery store.
- Find it all. Not only do farmers markets offer fresh vegetables and fruit but cheese, meat and eggs as well. I now know where I can get fresh eggs weekly and its on the honor system, meaning, I can get them at any time!
- Join CSA. Once you know the farmer, you may like or even love his practices. Ask if they have a CSA to join so you get their produce fresh!

I know I sure was! I couldn’t wait to eat so I made a delicious kale salad using my fresh ingredients.
Kale and Date Salad:
- 2 cups of fresh kale leaves
- 1/4 cup grape tomatoes
- 2 tbs red onion (or 1 shallot)
- 3 dates: chopped
- 2 tbs: feta cheese
- 2 Tbs olive oil
- 1 Tbs honey
- salt and pepper
- half lemon: squeezed
- In a small bowl, combine olive oil, honey, lemon juice, pinch of salt and pepper and red onion. Whisk together.
- In another bowl, combine kale, tomatoes, dates.
- Pour honey dressing over kale salad and stir to combine.
- Add feta cheese and enjoy!
